*BIG MOUNTAIN
CANNOT BE EXCLUDED FROM THE LEGACY OF THE FOUR CORNERS
ENERGY WARS:
Since the
beginning of the Big Mountain resistance elders would
say: "We are resisting relocation and the coal mining
not only for ourselves but for the whole world. Black
Mesa must not be desecrated because of its sacredness
--it provides life to all living things including all
the human races." Elder resisters of Big Mountain
have referred to the coal as the Mother Earth's liver. |

In 30 years the Black Mesa mine has contributed an estimated 325 million tons of CO2 to the atmosphere! If Peabody's Black Mesa Project is permitted, coal from the Black Mesa mine could potentially contribute an additional 290 million tons of CO2 to the global warming crisis!
PEABODY COAL COMPANY 'S PLANS UNDERMINES
PLANETARY LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS BY ACCELERATING ECOLOGICAL
& CULTURAL COLLAPSE! We cannot allow a small
cartel of energy corporations and their financial backers
to knowingly de-stabilize our planet’s climate and devastate
whole communities & ecosystems for their own personal
gain. This may turn out to be the most devastating crime ever
perpetrated against humanity, the planet and future generations.
Indigenous and land-based people globally have maintained
the understanding that our collective survival is deeply dependent
on our relationship to the Earth. We are at a critical juncture and must take a stand in support communities on the front lines of resistance now!
The blatancy of the corporate power grab and the accelerating ecological meltdown is evidence that we do not live in an era where we can afford the luxury of fighting the symptoms!
Black Mesa residents say "Coal is the liver of Mother Earth, keep it in the ground, keep her alive and healthy! Save Nihima Dzil Yijiin! Protect Our Mother Black Mesa!"
NEXT STEPS:
After this comment period, OSM is scheduled to issue a Final
Environmental Impact Statement with a "Record of Decision"
on the project. After the Record of Decision is made, there
is a 45-day appeal process. If the decision is made in favor
of the Black Mesa Project, this is when appeals can be made.
OSM states
that no new studies will be made. Stay posted as your support
may be needed during this critical time.

The Black Mesa Project Environmental Impact Statement (BMP-EIS)
outlines harmful impacts to every level of the ecological
and cultural systems on Black Mesa and has global repercussions. If we don't stop these plans, Peabody will have the green
light to:
-
Establish permanent mining rights until the coal runs
out or until at least 2026!
Substantially accelerate global climate disruption and
cause an ecological meltdown.
Destroy thousands of acres of pristine canyon lands,
causing animal and plant ecology and cultural sites to vanish.
Increase the detonation of coal on a daily basis, affecting air quality and health of miners, local residents, and their
livestock.
Deplete the already scarce water tables and regional aquifer that are all essential to residential survival.
Uproot & relocate families from their
ancestral homelands due to coal mining expansion.
-
Sacrifice human dignity and planetary health
for elite profit! Peabody would cause many more problems than
what is reflected here

Peabody coal company, like all corporations
mining the Earth for profit, is rooted in sacrificing human
dignity and planetary health for elite profit and is out of
alignment with common sense values. Its roots remain sunk
deeply in the history of colonial genocide, corporate power
grabs, and ecological devastation.
LEGITIMACY OF THE BMP EIS PROCESS IS QUESTIONABLE: The
Office Of Surface Mining (OSM) assures us they will review
our comments and continue with the preparation of the final
Final Environmental Impact Statement (F-EIS) & that EIS’s
are based on available data and information. However, Peabody
Western Coal Company has issued many changes to the BMP-EIS
since it was originally published. The draft EIS is the same
document as previously issued. This information has not been
made available to the public for comment! The public is being
asked to comment yet we do not have all the information necessary
to make a well-informed comment. Additionally, OSM needs to
throw out this EIS and completely redo the proposal to address
global warming and other aspects. We question the legitimacy
of the OSM/ Peabody-funded EIS process.
POINTS OF INTERVENTION! Agencies involved in the decision making
process:
Peabody Coal Company is funding the EIS process. The Hopi
Tribe, Navajo Nation, Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), Bureau
of Land Management (BLM), Bureau of Reclamation (BOR), U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA); U.S. Department of
Agriculture Forest Service (USFS), County of Mohave, Arizona;
and City of Kingman, Arizona will cooperate with OSMRE in
the preparation of the EIS.
. URGENT-PLEASE ACT NOW!

McCAIN'S RELOCATION LEGISLATION
S1003 DOES NOT MAKE IT TO RESOLUTION! Senate
Bill 1003 (The Navajo Hopi Land Settlement Act of
1974 Amendments) proposed by AZ Senator & Presidential
hopeful John McCain did not come to a resolution!
If passed, this bill would have had dire consequences
for Dine’ families who continue to live on their
ancestral homeland, for the families who have moved
and for the land of Black Mesa. While S1003 passed
through the Senate, it never made it out of the House
Resources Committee to the House floor for a vote.
The congressional session ended with no action being
taken. Many thanks to all of the action
taken in support of the Dineh and in
stopping this bill, and the relocation laws. Thousands
of letters,
emails, and faxes were sent from throughout Indian
Country and
general support network, as well as the video sent
to Congress that a
Black Mesa resident and BMIS volunteer compiled of
statements from residents of the 'Hopi Partitoned
Lands'.
